(June 21, 2022, Red Wing, Minn.) – On June 21 at 3:24 a.m., the Red Wing Fire Department received a call reporting a residential structure fire in the 900 Block of West Third Street in Red Wing.

Firefighter/paramedics were on the scene within four minutes of receiving the call and utilized an offensive fire attack to combat the fire. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines to the interior of the structure. A primary search of the building was completed and the fire was extinguished approximately 30 minutes after arrival. There were no injuries.

There was moderate fire damage to the attic area. There is, however, moderate smoke damage throughout the first and second floors of the building. The building was left uninhabitable.

Apparatus used on the scene included three fire engines, one ladder truck, one ambulance, two chief officers, and one utility vehicle. A total of 20 firefighters worked at the scene for more than two hours. Red Wing Police Department, Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office Dispatchers, Goodhue Fire Department, and Ellsworth Fire Department assisted on scene. Ellsworth Ambulance and Meisville Fire Department provided station coverage.

“All residents are reminded to have multiple working smoke detectors. Our ongoing education program encourages checking smoke detector batteries every spring and fall to make sure they’re ready when they’re needed.”

The cause of the fire, which originated in the attic, was caused by an act of nature by a lightning strike.
