[ARCHIVED] Progress Made on Demolition of Old St. John's Hospital

Demolition of Old St. John's Hospital Buildings

Significant progress has been made on the demolition of the old St. John's Hospital site. Mayo Clinic and its contractor are tearing down the buildings they own at 1407 West Fourth Street.

The buildings have come down quickly, with the remnants expected to come down yet this week. Residents in that area may experience high noise levels and see construction dust during the demolition process.

A temporary lane shift will be in place for the project's duration, and a no parking area has been added nearby. The number of trucks hauling debris is expected to increase as as the demolition wraps up. View the truck route map here

Most of the concrete foundations and retaining walls are expected to be recycled for further use, such as material for roads and parking lots. An estimated 70% of the debris will be re-used this way. The rest will need to be disposed of in a landfill due to it largely being mixed with rebar.

While Mayo Clinic doesn't have immediate plans for the property once demolition is complete, the land is zoned residential (lower density). Discussions about the future of the property will likely continue early next year. Watch for future updates on this project and property as they become available.
