[ARCHIVED] Annual Hydrant Flushing

Photo of a yellow fire hydrant flushing water out over grass.

Public Works will begin main and hydrant flushing on Monday, May 3.  Throughout the year, rust and naturally occurring sediment can form in water systems. Main and hydrant flushing maintains water quality by rapidly forcing water through the system lines to clear them of accumulated material and ensures that all fire hydrants are working properly.  In Red Wing, improved water quality means that main and hydrant flushing happens only once a year and usually early in the spring.

Residents may notice decreased water pressure or water discoloration while nearby mains and hydrants are being flushed in their neighborhood.  If this occurs, allow cold water faucets to run inside the home to clear the discolored water.
