League of Women Voters Announces
Meet Your 2020 Candidates

Events to be co-hosted by Prairie Island Indian Community and Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce

Red Wing, MN -- The League of Women Voters Red Wing, Prairie Island Indian Community, and the Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce will co-host a series of candidate events in September featuring local and state office candidates.  “2020 is a year like no other and our traditional candidate forums will look very different this year,” states Randy Decker, LWV Red Wing Voter Service Chair.  “We are excited to be able to hold these events outdoors before early voting begins on September 18. Candidates and voters will be able to engage in a safe manner.”

“Many smaller leagues around the state are unable to hold forums at all this fall and even the larger leagues are not holding in-person events.  We are working together with many community partners to bring candidates and voters together for a discussion of the issues we face.  Let’s hope it doesn’t rain!” said Tina Langton, President, LWV Red Wing.

Event information is found on their Facebook page and the LWV website.  There you will find the form to submit questions for the candidates.  No live questions from the audience will be taken during the forum due to COVID-19 safety concerns. However, candidates have been invited to meet with voters at designated locations around the park before and after the event while keeping a safe distance.

Events will begin at 5 p.m. at Red Wing Central Park Bandshell on September 10, 15, and 17.  These events are free and open to the public.  Mask use and appropriate distancing are required. Bring a chair or blanket for seating in the park. Although this event is taking place in a public space, we ask that audience members respect the non-partisan nature of LWV events.  We discourage wearing party or candidate clothing, buttons, stickers, hats, or otherwise displaying a party or candidate preference during the candidate forums. The events will be taped and available on YouTube, our local access channel, and in the voter guide. Videotaping by others is not permitted during League candidate events so that all events are broadcast in their entirety for fairness to all.

Format of Candidate Forums
Beginning in 2016, League of Women Voters Minnesota implemented a Candidate Participation policy change that all forums/events will be held as scheduled, even if one of the candidates is unable or unwilling to attend. During the forum, candidates will deliver an opening statement and a closing statement. Each candidate will have a limited time to answer the questions posed by the moderator.  The League of Women Voters Red Wing does not endorse candidates for office or political parties. LWV is a nearly 100-year old 501(c)(3) political organization that encourages informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Membership is open to all. Membership information will also be available at the Candidate Forums.
