This year, in recognition of 75 years of peace since the bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the “Japan Committee” of Sister Cities International (SCI) invites sister cities across the United States to participate in a simultaneous ringing of bells.
In Red Wing, in solidarity with SCI and sister cities in the U.S. and Japan, the Red Wing Sister Cities Commission invites the public to join them for two bell-ringing events. The first will be held on Wednesday, August 5 at 6:15 p.m. and the second on Saturday, August 8 at 9:02 p.m. These times correspond to the exact dates and times in Japan (August 6 at 8:15 a.m. and August 9 at 11:02 a.m.) of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively.
On each occasion, the bell ringing will commence with a small group of handbells. After that, the steeple bells of local churches will begin tolling and residents are invited to join in ringing their bells. In all, the ringing will last approximately 5 minutes.
Both bell-ringing events will be held in Central Park, with a brief presentation prior to the bell ringing. Residents are encouraged to arrive about 15 minutes prior to the start time and are welcome to bring their own bells—anything from handbells to windchimes to the sound of a bell on a cell phone—to participate in the ringing or simply be present. Social distancing will be observed for both events and masks are encouraged.
