Acclaimed Artist Brings Two Puppet Theater Pieces to the Sheldon Theatre

“…a very funny puppet play for grown-ups (which) has as whimsical a relationship with time as it does with realism”… -- NY Times

“Frohardt and company have been finessing their piece for years, and the result is something extraordinarily integrated, burnished to a high gloss.”– Time Out NY

(RED WING, Minn., March 19, 2019) – Award-winning artist, puppet artist, and director Robin Frohardt brings The Pigeoning, her comedic yet heartfelt family-friendly puppet piece, to the Sheldon Theatre for two performances at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27.

A New York Times Critic’s Pick, The Pigeoning takes a look at the divide between humans and nature, at a time when listening to the animals may be the best bet. In this magical telling, Frank – obsessed with cleanliness and order – is plagued by pigeons. Convinced the pigeons are plotting against him, Frank sets out on an adventure to solve a problem that perhaps isn’t really there.

An original play, hailed by The New York Times as “a tender, fantastical symphony of the imagination,” The Pigeoning is created using Japanese bunraku-style puppetry, performed by five puppeteers with original music composed by Freddi Price. The score was nominated for a 2015 Drama Desk Award (“most outstanding music in a play”). The lush, emotionally rich score buoys Frank and the audience along in this primarily wordless play.

The one-of-a-kind, 60-minute show provides an intimate experience. Bonnie Schock, Sheldon Executive Director, said, “The Pigeoning will delight and enthrall regular theater-goers as well as newcomers, including families with school-age children. This enchanting, remarkably poignant piece of theatre is contemporary puppetry at its best.”

In addition, Frohardt will perform a short, site-specific companion work, The Dumpster Monster, in locations around Red Wing in the days leading up to The Pigeoning mainstage performance. The Dumpster Monster features a 10-foot high inflatable plastic bag monster that explodes from a dumpster. In this interactive piece, the audience is encouraged to participate by playing with various cockroach, fly, and rat puppets that swarm around it.

Performances of The Dumpster Monster are free with no reservation required and run approximately 10 minutes at the following times and locations listed below. Times are approximate and subject to change for these pop-up events. The Sheldon will provide schedule updates, as applicable, on its website and social media pages.

The Pigeoning and The Dumpster Monster take place during the week of Earth Day (April 22). Both plays’ themes center on humans’ relationship to nature. “They’re the perfect way to celebrate and explore Earth Day through the wonder of puppetry and storytelling,” said Schock.

Known for her rich aesthetic and highly detailed constructions, Brooklyn-based Frohardt has a knack for taking a simple premise to an elaborate realization. Her vivid imagination, unique sense of humor and stunning technical craft come together to create work that defies the conventions of traditional storytelling. The Pigeoning is part of the Sheldon’s Enlighten series, powerful contemporary works that tell exceptional stories from diverse viewpoints, celebrating shared humanity and encouraging exploration discovery and wonder. The event is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Tickets to The Pigeoning are $20 and can be purchased online at or by calling 651-388-8700.
