Right lane closure on Hwy 61 near Red Wing Bridge put in place to guard against possible rock slides
RED WING, Minn. — The westbound right lane on Highway 61 near Barn Bluff in Red Wing is closed as a precaution to guard motorists from any potential rocks falling from the bluff area during the seasonal ground thawing and melting snow period, according to the Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation.
Barriers were set up in the right lane of Highway 61 heading into Red Wing at the bluff. Traffic continues in both directions on the four-lane section approaching Red Wing. The barriers will remain in place until later in the season when officials determine that rock slides are not a risk to motorists.
The Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge project includes building a new bridge to replace the Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge, replacing the historic slip ramp Highway 63 Bridge over Highway 61, reconstructing approach roadways in Minnesota and Wisconsin, improving access to Red Wing, and upgrading pedestrian and bicyclist crossings. Zenith Tech is the prime contractor $63.4 million construction project. Traffic on the new bridge is expected by fall 2019.

Motorists should always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones. For real-time traffic information in Minnesota, call 511 or visit www.511mn.org.
