Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG) Information

Fats, oils, and grease, known collectively as "FOG," are a serious threat to sewer lines. When dumped down the drain, FOG materials can build up and clog pipes, creating blockages, backflow, even flooded homes or businesses.  Preventing FOG blockages in homes and businesses is important for the environment and saves money, as repair and cleanup of blockages can be costly.

As of 2021, the City of Red Wing uses Backflow Solutions Inc (BSI Online) for tracking and filing of all FOG maintenance reports. FOG generators and haulers will file their maintenance reports online and receive FOG correspondence from BSI online. BSI will send each facility a letter identifying the minimum maintenance schedule and procedures. The compliance tracking will largely be through self-certification; however, there will be scheduled and unannounced inspections that will include physical observation of the grease interceptor and logbook. This company is also used for filing backflow preventer testing in the City of Red Wing.
