Building Permits & Inspections

No structure can be erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, removed, converted, or demolished unless a building permit has been obtained from the City. In addition, permits are required for installment or replacement of a furnace, air conditioner, water heater, fireplace, swimming pool, fences (over 7’ tall), and retaining walls (over 4’ tall). Fences and retaining walls may also need a zoning permit. Drive aprons and sidewalks require permits from the Engineering Department located at Public Works.

Permit applications are available below or a paper application can be picked up at the Community Development Building located at 419 Bush Street. Permit applications identify and describe the work to be covered by the permit, the land on which the proposed work is to be done, and the use for which the proposed work is intended.

Your application will be reviewed and a permit will be issued for work that meets MN State Building code and City requirements. Permit fees are based on the City’s adopted fee schedule. Building permits become null and void if the work authorized by the permit does not begin within 190 days of the permit date, or if the work is suspended or abandoned at any time after the work has commenced for a period of 180 days.

Inspection Requirements

The Community Development Department is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at 419 Bush Street. You may call our office at 651-385-3623 or stop by during business hours to schedule an inspection related to your permit or make an appointment to meet with one of our building inspectors.

Electrical Permits

If your project requires an electrical permit, please refer to the State of Minnesota, Electrical Licensing and Inspection Department as the City of Red Wing does not issue or inspect electrical permits.
